" The Fiirst Sermon "
The Second sermon exhibition is part of a projected series of works seeking to use religion and spirituality as the starting point for creation. The first exhibition of the series, The First sermon, which was held at para/site from May to June 1997, focussed on the *big issues* of time and space, life and death. The focus of The Second Sermon is an exploration of attitudes towards the desire for material things. Under the engulfing tide of consumerism, the great goals of mankind have been disappearing one by one, and it seems that the heightening of personal desire has become the new spirit of the age. People*s sense of anxiety and unease is reflected in an increasing possessiveness and an urgent desire to grab hold of some kind of personal identity i order to prove their own existence. The proper relationship between man and objects has been reversed: the subsidiary has become the host, and the human spirit has become increasingly objectified.

In The Second Sermon I once again apply the form of the Tibetan mandala, using the perspective of the microcosm to depict the multitude of responses of the individual human mind to its external environment, and transforming these responses through the media of painting and installation. From another point of view, the Second Sermon can be described as seeking to express the six sensory responses elicited by the external world.
